2nd Workshop of Tianqin Science Mission Convened on Zhuhai Campus

On May 17, the 2nd Workshop of Tianqin Science Mission was convened in the S.T. Wu Center for Academic Exchange on Zhuhai campus. Among the attendees were Hu Wenrui, academician of Institute of Mechanics, Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS); Ye Chaohui, academician of Wuhan Institute of Physics and Mathematics, CAS; Luo Jun, President of SYSU and academician of CAS; Long Guangyan, Deputy Mayor of Zhuhai; and Ma Jun, Vice President of SYSU. About 50 specialists took part in the workshop and they came from Lomonosov Moscow State University, Russia; Academy of Mathematics and Systems Science, CAS; Beijing Normal University; Chongqing University; China Spacesat Co. Ltd.; Institute of Geodesy and Geophysics, CAS; Institute of Mechanics, CAS; Institute of Theoretical Physics, CAS; China National Institute of Metrology; Purple Mountain Observatory, CAS; Shanghai Engineering Center for Microsatellites; Wuhan Institute of Physics and Mathematics; Huazhong University of Science and Technology; and SYSU.

During the meeting, Luo Jun reviewed the important issues of the first workshop and announced the plan to build a space precision measurement laboratory and an observatory on Zhuhai campus, part of which will be open to Zhuhai residents for science education. The Tianqin science mission is expected to cultivate talents in the field of space precision measurement for China, upgrade the academic and research standard of space science and technology of SYSU, andbecome another achievement in cutting-edge scientific research and industry for Zhuhai. Luo Jun hopes that all panelists can contribute their insights to the mission through engaging in in-depth discussion for a feasible plan. He also invited the panelists to join SYSU in working on the Tianqin mission on Zhuhai campus as well as work, study, and live in the picturesque coastal city of Zhuhai.

In the address of Deputy Mayor Long Guangyan, she said that she is glad the workshop was held in Zhuhai and feel honored that the Tianqin mission has chosen to settle in the city. She also expressed her gratitude for President Luo’s endeavor in promoting the cooperation between SYSU and Zhuhai since he took office. According to the deputy mayor, Zhuhai is the most livable city of China and is striving to become one of the most livable in the world. The city has been dedicated to urban planning, environmental protection, the rule of law, and innovation. Being a close neighbor with Hong Kong across the sea and adjacent to Macao, Zhuhai will be connected to the world even more conveniently and receive more global attentionupon the completion of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge.Still, the settlement of the Tianqin Mission will once again bring special focus to Zhuhai. Hence, the Zhuhai government will provide strong support for the Tianqin mission.
Sponsored by Huazhong University of Science and Technology and organized by SYSU, the 2nd Workshop of Tianqin Science Mission lasted for 3 days after which the project application process would be officially initiated.
